I think Ms. Farkas has some excellent points, I agree that it is imperative to be RELEVANT - not just present on a social networking site - this is even more true now than in 2006. We have a myspace at port orchard that Shannon set up & maintains & it remains a great way to reach our teens - but if Shannon stopped maintaining our site, with todays tech-savvy teens, it would be far worse than not having a presence at all. I wanted to edit the photo on the top of our blog, but out of respect to my good friend jim who looks great in the photo, I kept it up. That was the day the parrot tried to snatch the hat off the secretary of state Sam Reed - the fun never ends at our branch! this is really fun, but I still think wikis are btter internal tools than external as far as libraries go - with the reader wiki being the only "public" application I can see - however, things change by the minute, i could feel differently if I saw a great library wiki. I look forward to using wiki's to track projects, and keep track of information we share at the branch. Perhaps with wikis, more than traditional websites or blogs where one or a few people are responsible for the content, wikis are dependent on interest being sustained in a subject in order for the wiki to remain relevant. this is particularly true if the wiki is going to be used to list activities, etc. Much of the info I found for Steven's county was out-of-date, and with no one person responsible for updating, it's easy for this to fall through the cracks. I think wiki's have some great uses - I particularly like the idea of a reader's wiki for KRL patrons and project-specific wikis for staff.

Twittering

I could be the last one to hoot on twitter before the deadline! When I first heard about these, I thought - what a way to get more information than you need - and I didn't jump on the RSS bandwagon. It took 2.0 to get me to do this, and I still think it's possible to overdo subscribing to feeds - I like to be in control of when I get my information - and as anybody with an overloaded email inbox knows, information can pile up very quickly. However, I enjoy being able to see when some of my favorite KRL bloggers add to their blogs & I love my NPR!

TAGGING!

Fa lalalala...lalalala! Now my Christmas shopping will be so easy - wow, do I ever love tagging. We use it at port orchard on the reference desk all the time - but I never really realized how much I loved tagging for my personal use. Since I have a new pc, (our old one crashed & I lost all my beloved favorites) I'm now going to tag everything so i'll never be in this predicament again! Of course, i have to find time - but this is one thing that's so quick & easy, even i can find time to tag while I get my holiday shopping done. I surf the net every day, use email, shop online, download music, and of course use it daily for my job at KRL, but other than delicious, I'm really using very few of the applications we'll be exploring inKRl2.0. As for 43 Things, I generally don't ever use lists like this, but I'm definitely going to check out some of the applications mentioned. I had a friend visit this weekend and he started to teach my 9-year old how to write code - in a few minutes my son had a website up and was madly listing all his pokemon cards. While I'm a huge proponent of children staying connected with the physical world, and not really getting involved with online communities, etc; I have to admit, it was pretty cool to watch his enthusiasm for his new website!
